Social Studies Thematic Units
Social Studies Thematic Units are a set of interactive and print PDFs for World and U.S. History classrooms. The product consists of 40 PDF units, spanning from pre-agricultural to modern-day history. Each unit averages about 100 pages of learning materials and activities centered around a single subject (e.g.,World War II, The Roman Empire). Activities include interactive fields that students can use virtually, and they are also reproducible for in-classroom learning.

I was the sole designer on this project, which we began creating in 2020, as a tool for remote classrooms. As of 2025, Social Studies Thematic Units have generated $452k in sales.
Cover typefaces: For the product titles, I chose Antonio for a bold look that would stand up to the dynamic images. For the unit titles, I chose AlexandriaFLF for a "historic" feel that paired nicely with the blocky look of the product title.

Interior: Since the product was a compilation of various existing products, as well as new and reworked content, I chose a basic sans serif, Acumin Variable Concept, to lay out the new content and simplify the overall page design.
For the cover designs, I wanted to create dynamic images with a sense of movement that would also be easily recognizable to the time period that the unit was covering. After collaborating with fellow members of the Social Studies department, I sourced art and images in the public domain that either represented the time period or were recognizable to the time period. Photographs were given a "paint filter" treatment to help bridge the visual gap between images. Every image was edited to create a cutout that slightly overlapped the title area, unifying the various images and adding the movement I was aiming for.
